Milwaukee — The Brew City

The city

83 entries, framed and written out

Milwaukee is the largest city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, situated on the western shores of Lake Michigan. Home to roughly 577,000 residents, it is globally celebrated for its rich brewing history, legendary summer festival lineup, and vibrant, culturally diverse neighborhoods.

Milwaukee's story began in the 1840s when European immigrants — especially Germans — brought their brewing traditions to the shores of Lake Michigan. Today that legacy lives on not only in historic giants but in one of America's most exciting craft beer scenes.

Everything below came out of the guide this property replaces, record for record. What changed is the shape: the pictures are framed rather than laid under the type, every entry keeps its own notes on its own card, and the whole book is in the page rather than drawn by a script after it — so it prints, it searches, and it reads the same in both editions.

World's Largest Four-Faced Clock

World's Largest Four-Faced Clock

South Side • Rockwell Automation Campus Where

Towering 280 feet above Milwaukee's south side, the Allen-Bradley (now Rockwell Automation) Clock Tower boasts four massive 40-foot faces — among the largest four-faced clocks on the planet. Built in 1962, it was once the go-to timepiece for the entire city; locals literally set their watches by it. The glowing faces are visible for miles, especially striking at night against the industrial skyline. While you can't climb it, the sheer scale and glowing presence make it an unforgettable Milwaukee landmark and a symbol of the city's hardworking heritage.

The Original "Uecker Seats"

The Original "Uecker Seats"

American Family Field • Brewers Games Where

The highest, cheapest seats in the ballpark, named after legendary Brewers broadcaster and comedian Bob Uecker. His famous 'I must be in the front row!' bit from Miller Lite commercials turned these nosebleed seats into a point of pride and humor. For true fans, sitting 'Uecker' is a rite of passage — you get the full baseball experience with panoramic views, and the stories are better than the price tag. It's pure Milwaukee sports self-deprecating charm.

Friday Fish Fry Culture

Friday Fish Fry Culture

Citywide • Every Friday Night Where

Every single Friday, Milwaukee transforms into a city-wide fish fry frenzy. Born from Catholic immigrant traditions (no meat on Fridays), it evolved into a joyful secular ritual. Almost every bar, restaurant, church hall, and VFW serves crispy cod or perch with fries, coleslaw, tartar sauce, and rye bread. Some places do all-you-can-eat. It's the ultimate weekly Milwaukee social event — cheap, hearty, and deeply communal.

Pabst Mansion Secret Tunnels

Pabst Mansion Secret Tunnels

Historic Third Ward / Pabst Mansion Where

Captain Frederick Pabst — one of Milwaukee's greatest beer barons — built this opulent 1890s Victorian mansion. Rumors persist of secret tunnels connecting the mansion to the original Pabst Brewery (possibly for discreet Prohibition-era movement or just Gilded Age drama). While some stories are legend, the mansion's real history of brewing royalty, lavish parties, and architectural grandeur is fascinating. Tours available; the interiors are stunning.

The Milwaukee Protocol

The Milwaukee Protocol

Medical History • Children's Hospital of Wisconsin Where

In 2004, 15-year-old Jeanna Giese from Fond du Lac was bitten by a rabid bat and became the first known human to survive rabies without prior vaccination. Doctors at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, led by Dr. Rodney Willoughby, used an experimental induced-coma protocol that saved her life. The 'Milwaukee Protocol' has since been used worldwide with varying success and represents a bold medical milestone born right here.

The Bronze Pig at Public Market

The Bronze Pig at Public Market

Milwaukee Public Market • Third Ward Where

Tucked inside the vibrant Milwaukee Public Market in the Historic Third Ward sits a simple bronze pig statue. Following European market traditions, visitors rub its snout for good luck, fortune, and a prosperous visit. It's become a beloved local ritual — shoppers, foodies, and tourists all participate. The market itself is a bustling year-round food hall with vendors, cheese, seafood, and prepared foods — the perfect place to start or end any Milwaukee adventure.

More Bars Per Capita Than Almost Anywhere

More Bars Per Capita Than Almost Anywhere

Citywide • Neighborhood Taverns to Cocktail Lounges Where

Milwaukee consistently ranks at or near the top of U.S. cities for bars per capita. This isn't just stats — it's a lifestyle. German brewing heritage, long cold winters, strong neighborhood tavern culture, and a city that genuinely knows how to pour a pint created one of America's greatest drinking cities. From legendary dives (Wolski's, Holler House) to world-class craft beer bars and sleek cocktail spots, there's a bar for every mood and every crew.

The Bronze Fonz Statue

The Bronze Fonz Statue

Milwaukee RiverWalk • Downtown Where

Standing proudly on the Milwaukee RiverWalk just south of Wells Street is the beloved 5-foot-6-inch bronze statue of Arthur 'The Fonz' Fonzarelli from the classic TV show Happy Days (which had strong Milwaukee connections). Visitors of all ages strike the iconic thumbs-up pose, leather jacket cool, for photos. It's become one of the city's most popular and photogenic landmarks — a perfect blend of pop culture nostalgia and pure Milwaukee charm.

Frozen Custard Capital of the World

Frozen Custard Capital of the World

Kopp's, Leon's & more • Multiple Neighborhoods Where

Milwaukee proudly claims the title of Frozen Custard Capital of the World. The thick, ultra-creamy frozen custard (not ice cream) was perfected here. Kopp's (started by pioneering businesswoman Elsa Kopp in 1950) invented the 'Flavor of the Day' concept still used today. Leon's (iconic since the 1940s) is the classic stand with the famous neon and long lines. The texture is denser, richer, and more satisfying — a true Milwaukee obsession.

SafeHouse Restaurant

SafeHouse Restaurant

Downtown Milwaukee • Old World Third Street Where

One of Milwaukee's most unique dining experiences: a spy-themed speakeasy restaurant where you 'apply for a mission' or give a password to enter through hidden doors. Inside is a world of espionage decor, gadgets, secret passages, and fun immersive elements. The menu has creative dishes with clever names. It's playful, theatrical, and perfect for groups who want more than just dinner — it's an adventure and a story to tell.

St. Joan of Arc Chapel

St. Joan of Arc Chapel

Marquette University Campus • Downtown Where

Tucked away on the Marquette University campus is a genuine medieval treasure: the St. Joan of Arc Chapel. Parts of the chapel date back to the 15th century in France. It was carefully disassembled, shipped across the Atlantic, and reassembled on campus in the 1960s. It's older than the United States itself and offers a stunning, peaceful contrast to the modern city around it. Beautiful stained glass, intimate scale, and profound history in one quiet space.

World's Largest Antique Microphone Collection

World's Largest Antique Microphone Collection

Paquette Electronics / Hidden East Side Shop Where

Hidden inside a Milwaukee electronics and recording equipment shop is Bob Paquette's legendary collection — over 1,000 antique and historic microphones. Includes rare pieces used on polar expeditions, early radio broadcasts, and one-of-a-kind artifacts (including connections to Alexander Graham Bell era tech). It's a secret paradise for musicians, podcasters, audio engineers, content creators, and anyone who geeks out over sound and history.
