Of the 661 places, 382 are social facilities — 87 of them nursing homes or assisted-living residences, the care facilities in this register’s name — and 143 are community centres. OpenStreetMap records no legal status: 616 places carry no operator:type at all, so this is a register of non-profit and community organizations and care facilities as OpenStreetMap maps them, not a list of registered charities. One record is left out by hand: way 284847948, a three-storey building on North Brother Island tagged social_facility=nursing_home, named “Nursing Home”, with the placeholder building number 2000000: the island is an uninhabited bird sanctuary closed to the public, among the ruins of the old Riverside Hospital, and nothing there cares for anyone.

Neighbourhoods are New York City’s 2020 Neighborhood Tabulation Areas (NTAs), drawn by the Department of City Planning and published on NYC Open Data. A place is filed in the NTA whose outline contains its point; nothing is guessed from an address or a nearest town. NTA names follow the city’s, and the city says an NTA is a statistical area that only roughly matches the neighbourhood a New Yorker would name.

Needs are read from the tags first and the name last. An outreach facility is not counted as mental health unless its tags or its name say so; an adult day care is filed by whom it serves (social_facility:for); “Advocacy and rights” needs a tag or a name that says so, and the other NGO, charity, association and foundation offices are “Associations, charities and foundations”. 77 places match no need and are listed without one. 22 names occur more than once (50 places): they are separate objects in OpenStreetMap, and every count here counts places.

The NTA outlines are the NYC Department of City Planning’s (NYC Open Data, dataset 9nt8-h7nd, whose metadata names no licence; the city’s open data terms of use apply). nyc.org.im, which carried this register until labs 548, named its places after GeoNames (CC BY 4.0); each of its old addresses now leads to the neighbourhood carrying its name when that holds any of its records, else to the page holding most of them. The street map is OpenFreeMap (© OpenMapTiles, data © OpenStreetMap contributors); it loads only when you open it.
