Ground stops rank first, then closures, ground delay programs, and departure and arrival delays; within each, the longest published delay and then the longest time in effect come first. Restriction notices — closure NOTAMs that limit only some traffic, usually general aviation — are listed last and are not counted as disruptions above. Airports outside the U.S. that the FAA’s status also carries, such as Toronto Pearson, get a group of their own after that and are not counted, mapped or put in a state.

What the terms mean

Six kinds of disruption, in plain words.

Ground stop

Flights bound for the airport are held on the ground at their departure airports until the stop is lifted. The FAA publishes the reason and, where set, an expected end time.

Ground delay program

Flights to the airport are given later departure times so arrivals match what the airport can take. The FAA publishes the average and the maximum delay it has assigned, the program’s start and end, and which departure airports it covers.

Departure and arrival delays

General delays the FAA reports at an airport, given as a range from a minimum to a maximum, with a trend: increasing, decreasing or steady. The reason often names a traffic-management measure and a cause, such as weather.

Airport closure

A closure published by NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions), with a start and a reopening time. Many closures carry exceptions — helicopters or emergencies, say — so the notice is printed in full.

Restriction notice

A closure NOTAM that shuts the airport to some traffic only, most often unscheduled general aviation. Airline flights usually run as normal, so these are listed but not counted as disruptions.

Airspace flow program

Like a ground delay program, but for a block of airspace rather than an airport: flights planned through a constrained area are metered. It is not tied to one airport, so it is listed on its own.

The FAA’s status, not a forecast.

The source is the FAA’s National Airspace System status service at nasstatus.faa.gov: its airport events document, which carries each program’s start and end times, the impacting condition, delays in minutes and the FAA advisory, and its airport status file, which carries the FAA’s update time, the delay ranges and trends as the FAA words them, and airspace flow programs. Both are free and need no key, but neither sends CORS headers, so this page asks a small relay on its own origin. The relay has two hardcoded addresses, takes no parameters, keeps a two-minute cache and hands the page one JSON document.

The reasons, delays, trends and NOTAMs are the FAA’s text. This page’s own arithmetic is limited to counting airports and programs, turning the FAA’s “1 hour and 42 minutes” into minutes so the list can be sorted, measuring how long a program has run from the start time the FAA gives, and placing an airport in a state (from the register on Airports, or from the FAA’s coordinates against the state outlines when an airport is not on it). Where the FAA gives no start time, no duration is shown.

This is what the FAA says about airports and airspace. It does not say whether a particular flight is late or cancelled — the airline is the place for that. If the relay cannot reach the FAA it serves its last good copy marked stale, and if it has none it says so.
