Method

Method, sources and limits

The fight desk is a reader for two public feeds. It prints what they carry and says so when they carry nothing. This page sets out what is read, from where, and what the desk cannot tell you.

Method

Cards, schedules and results are asked through a small relay on labs.llc’s server, which reads ESPN’s scoreboard and keeps one copy of each board, shared by every reader, for up to three hours; a kept copy is shown as one, with the time it was read, and your browser asks ESPN directly only when the relay cannot answer. Prices go from your browser to ESPN’s odds feed, and labs.llc keeps no copy of them. If the feeds stop, the instruments say which one did not answer; the pages of explanation remain.

The rule is that a number on the page is a number the wire published. Two kinds of figure are computed here and are labelled as computed: kilograms from pounds, and the break-even percentage and margin from a pair of moneylines.

The order of a card

The feed lists a card from the opening bout to the last. The pages reverse that, so the top of the bill is read first. The top bout is marked as the headline bout only when the feed’s own name for the event contains a name of each of its two fighters.

Times and dates

Times are the feed’s, shown in your device’s time zone. The feed files events by the US Eastern date, so the pages build their requests from that date wherever you are.

How often it reads

Once when a page opens and once each time you press Refresh. On the card page, while any bout on the card is in progress or the card is part-way through, the scoreboard is read again every 30 seconds, only while the page is on screen, and the card is redrawn only when something on it changed. A request that has not answered in 15 seconds is abandoned and reported.

How a failure reads

Each feed is named when it fails, with what went wrong in words: it timed out, it answered with an HTTP status, it sent something that was not JSON, or it answered without a list of events. A failed reading after a good one keeps the good one on screen, faded, with the time it was taken. A feed that did not answer is never shown as a feed that had nothing to say.

Where it sits

The desk is part of EZ Score, labs.llc’s scoreboard, and was mma.com.im until 2026. EZ Score’s own board carries UFC beside every other league it follows; the desk carries the fight-only detail that board does not.

Limits

  • The feeds are unofficial and undocumented. ESPN publishes no specification or terms for them and may change or remove them without notice.
  • Results are unofficial. The feed itself labels its method entries as an unofficial winner. The official result is the regulating commission’s.
  • Draws and no contests are not distinguished. The scoreboard flags a winner or flags none.
  • Not every promotion is covered. ESPN lists 48 MMA leagues. When their scoreboards were read on 28 September 2026 for 28 June 2026 to 6 April 2027, three answered with events and 45 answered with none. The three are the choices on this desk: UFC (31 events, 251 bouts in that reading), PFL (8 and 75) and Other (11 and 26).
  • The scoreboard carried no odds for fights on 28 September 2026 (0 of 352 bouts). Lines come from the separate odds feed, one request for each bout, and only one bookmaker is named in it.
  • A reading is capped at 1,000 events. The pages say so if an answer reaches the cap.
  • No pictures. The feed carries flag and portrait images; the desk loads none of them and prints the country as a word.

What is kept in your browser

Two small values in your browser’s local storage: the edition you chose, paper or dark, which is also kept in a cookie named labs_edition, and the promotion you last picked, under ez.mma.league. Neither is sent anywhere by the desk’s code. Your requests for odds go from your browser to ESPN, which sees them as it would see any visit; the scoreboard is asked by labs.llc’s server, so ESPN sees the server rather than you, unless the relay cannot answer and your browser asks ESPN itself. The relay keeps nothing about you beyond a short-lived request count under a keyed hash of your address. labs.llc counts visits with the Google Analytics 4 tag every labs.llc page carries; the desk adds no event of its own.

Not advice

Odds are shown as information about a market. Nothing here is a recommendation to bet, and there are no betting links, affiliate links or picks anywhere on the desk.
